Rare and very large festival/tent banner, 432 x 61 cm (170 x 24 inches). With a repeat pattern of parrots and flowers hand embroidered in vibrant, candy coloured silks. Gujurat, circa 1950.
The pennants, created from recycled sari's, have been carefully colour matched, utilising a limited and very soft palette that compliments the embroidered top panel superbly. Overall, a really well considered and highly decorative example.
Condition is excellent, clean and bright. All the original hanging loops are present. There are losses to the embroidery throughout the length.
Provenance: The Carol Summers Collection of Indian Folk Textiles. Carol Summers was a well known American printmaker who travelled extensively in India and Nepal to build his collection of folk textiles between 1976 and 2013. The vibrancy of colour and bold expression of these textiles was a clear and important influence on his own work.
